SEAWEED RESOURCE FOR HARVEST IN GREENLAND

There is a growing commercial focus on seaweed in the Western world. Along the coast of Greenland, there are robust seaweed forests, presenting significant potential for seaweed harvesting. The aim of this project is to establish a knowledge base for the seaweed resources in a specific area in Greenland.

Specifically, it involves mapping the seaweed resources and investigating the most environmentally friendly methods of harvesting seaweed harvesting and whether regulations and quotas should be introduced for seaweed harvesting and whether requirements for an environmental impact assessment should be imposed.

PLANET The project will contribute to a sustainable harvesting of seaweed in Greenland and a sustainable utilization of maritime resources.

PEOPLE Seaweed harvesting can potentially support the local community by creating job opportunities in the coastal societies.

PROSPERITY The mapping of seaweed resources will show the large potential of innovation and development of local business opportunities in seaweed harvesting.

PARTNERSHIPS The protecting contributes to a collaboration between partners from across the Nordic and Arctic borders. Additionally, the project cooperates with different participants and institutions by involving advisory- and research institutions.
