To be nominated for the prize when it is given to a small or large ensemble or an individual musician, the nominee must be an active, practising musician. The musical activity must be characterised as innovative and of a high artistic and technical standard. In making the assessment it is important to have continuity in the work as well as the work being regarded as innovative within its musical genre. Every other year, the prize is awarded to a living composer and every other year, to an artist or ensemble.

This year, Georg Olsen from Greenland is nominated, along with 12 other artists.

The prize is awarded on the occasion of The Nordic Council's 69th session, in Oslo, november 2018
